LEARN TO LOVE YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

The human body is fascinatingly intricate and is made up of multiple different systems that rely on each other. You’ve heard of the circulatory, respiratory, reproductive systems — but there is a lesser-known system that often gets overlooked.. the lymphatic system.

What is the Lymphatic System?

The lymphatic system is a network of a) vessels b) nodes and c) organs that course through our entire body. Together, this unit works to maintain the right amount of fluid balance in our bodies, while playing an absolutely vital role in supporting our immune system. Lymph, which is a clear fluid that contains white blood cells, some electrolytes and cellular waste, gets carried by the lymph vessels to the lymph nodes. Here, the nodes filter the lymph and remove pathogens and debris before returning it to our bloodstream. As for organs involved - our spleen, thymus and tonsils are closely linked with our lymphatic system because they’re sites of production and maturation of important front-line immune cells.

Think of the lymphatic system as the body's "mail delivery system." The vessels are the mail route, crisscrossing the body to pick up lymph (the "mail") from tissues and organs. The nodes act as mail sorting centres, where the lymph is inspected and filtered, removing any "undeliverable" items, such as pathogens or cellular waste. The spleen, thymus and tonsils are the main post offices, overseeing the processing and distribution of immune cells (called lymphocytes) and other important "packages" to where they are needed most in the body.

What does it do for me, really?

The lymphatic system is crucial for our overall health. It helps to:

  • Remove excess fluid from tissues; without it, we would be swollen all the time.

  • Absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system; without it, we would quickly become nutrient deficient.

  • Support the immune system by filtering out and destroying pathogens and abnormal cells; without it, every encounter with a pathogen would make us sick.

Naturopathic Tips to Optimize your Lymphatic System

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps to keep lymph flowing properly and supports overall lymphatic function. Aim for 2-3L/day minimum!

  2. Nutrition: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides essential nutrients and antioxidants that support lymphatic health.

  3. Keep Moving: Physical activity and exercise help to stimulate lymphatic flow and improve overall circulation.

  4. Herbal Support: Certain herbs like cleavers, red clover and echinacea support lymphatic function by improving circulation, reducing inflammation, or boosting the immune system.

  5. Dry Brushing: Gently dry brushing the skin with a soft-bristle brush can help to stimulate the lymphatic system and remove dead skin cells. Brushing very gently is key here, and you always want to start at the end of the limbs and brush towards the trunk (where the majority of the lymph nodes are). See the diagram below for some guidance on which directions to brush!

We may not be thinking about our lymphatic system a lot (or ever!) but we would certainly notice if it were no longer there for us. Even when we’re not battling an illness, there is always room to optimize our health. Learning to love your lymphatic system is a great opportunity to do just that!
